My Christian Journey – Quay Choi
The Lord is truly merciful, gracious and full of love towards those who follow Him
I believed in the Lord when I was 12 years old
It was at a time when the Church in London was being established. Those who came to the Lord were young teenagers from Vietnamese Chinese background. I really enjoyed going to the meetings and being with brothers and sisters. I felt the love and joy from God’s family which attracted me to spend as much time as I could with them.
My parents objected me going to Church
As a young and fervent new believer, I went to all the early morning cell group before school started, the Bible Study on Saturdays and Break Bread Meetings on Sundays. I continued this way for the next few years until I was 16. This displeased my parents and they began to think the worse and that I was led astray. Even though they had met the older brothers and sisters quite a few times through home visits, they did not trust them. Slowly they objected me going to Church and cell groups. They shouted and scolded me for going. I had to find an excuse for leaving the house so that I could go to the meetings.
One day when I came back from Break Bread Meeting, my father was waiting for me. He made me kneel down and he shouted at me for disobeying him about going to Church. He carried me to the toilet. There he put my head in the toilet and flushed it saying how I disobeyed him. My mother was standing on the side adding more shouting and scolding. That night and for many nights after that, I had to sleep in the same room as my parents so they could keep a close eye on me. They took away my house keys so I couldn’t go in and out of the house freely. I was only allowed to go to school and nowhere else.
I was very touched by brothers and sisters’ support
I felt very trapped and disheartened. However, I was not alone in my suffering. Around the same period of time many other brothers and sisters were being persecuted for their belief. One brother got beaten by his father. Another sister’s father tore her Bible and threw it into the toilet. Another sister who has two younger sisters who were also Christians got persecuted in the same way by their parents. Her father pulled the top of her hair so that her feet actually left the ground. I was by no means alone. It seems that the devil has aroused all these physical persecutions to destroy our faith.
After I told brothers and sisters about what had happened, they were full of support. They prayed for me earnestly. They even chipped in and brought me a Personal Cassette Player (Walkman) and recorded every single meeting and gave it to me at school so I could listen to all the messages. I was very touched by brothers and sisters support.
For a while I was unable to go to any meetings until I found a part-time job working in a pizza restaurant not far from the meeting place. I took this as an opportunity to go to meetings again. I would always choose to do a shift on a Sunday so I can go to Break Bread Meeting before I went to work. The Lord had truly opened a way for me. I just had to be patient and trust in Him.
I graduated in 1996
I became more free
Slowly as years went by as I got older, I became more free. My parents became more relaxed and did not persecute me anymore. Deep down they knew I was still going to meetings but they had nothing to hold me against. I was a good and obedient daughter, I finished my studies, I had part-time jobs to which I gave them a monthly allowance, I graduated from university and began my career.
The Lord is truly merciful…
I give thanks that after 28 years, in 2015, following my mother’s death, my father believed in the Lord. The Lord is truly merciful, gracious and full of love towards those who follow Him.
I am now married and have two kids of my own. We are a Christian family and my husband and I continue to teach and build the love of God into our children’s hearts and lives.
